I like Kenjo's books on motors:

"Electric Motors and their Controls" - TAK KENJO, Oxford Science
Publications - 1996

The book is a good basic introduction (very qualitative) w/o the Vector
Calculus abuse.

(He's got several books, including electronics for motor controls and
others)
