Hi All & David, I have attached a rather simple set-up of a magnet positioned mid way vertically between two parallel ferromagnetic bars and at the left end. A analysis of the forces acting on the magnet (via a clockwise contour around the 4 points near the magnet's corners) shows a net generation of a negative (to the left) x axis force where there should be a positive (to the right) x axis force as the magnet attempts to self centre in the middle of the two parallel bars.
