You can save files wherever you want to--the installation just sets 
things up initially so that it points to the "examples" subdirectory the 
first time you run the program. To change the starting directory, go to 
the "femm editor" entry in your start menu and right-click on (instead 
of the usual left-click). Pick "Properties" off of the dialog that pops 
up. There's an entry there labeled "Start in" that you'd change to what 
you want to be the starting directory.
