I just ran across this article in this month's issue of Transactions on
Control Systems Technology:

J. D. Lindlau and C. R. Knospe, "Feedback Linearization of an Active
Magnetic Bearing With Voltage Control." IEEE Transactions on Control
System Technology, 10(1):21-31, January 2002.

In this paper, FEMM is used to obtain a relationship between current and
total flux versus current and air gap for a magnetic bearing. The FEMM
results are then compared very favorably to experimental data.
