"pause" and "continue" capability

At some arbitrary times would very much like to have
"pause" and "continue" status for running lua and femm
programs.

Is there a way to do it? 

For example, program takes 9 hours to calculate a single
data point, need eleven data points. Would like to be able
to "pause" the program, do something else - even reboot the
computer, then "continue" the program, and the script. 

Right now the break key kills everything.
